THE AGING LOOP

Why Skin Deteriorates

Facial skin is one of the first organs to show rapid aging. According to the “Hallmarks of Facial Aging,” this isn’t just about time – it’s about a persistent biological cycle.

What is the Aging Loop ?

The Aging Loop is a self-sustaining, destructive cycle of cellular deterioration. It is not a straight line of aging; it is a negative feedback loop. When one skin cell is damaged, it triggers chemical signals that damage neighboring cells, creating a domino effect that accelerates skin aging exponentially.

The Mechanics of Decay

ROS attacks the “Holy Trinity” of skin molecules:

Disrupts mitochondrial DNA, killing energy production.

Destroys cell membranes, causing dehydration.

Degrades Collagen and Elastin, causing sagging and wrinkles.

Damaged cells don’t always die. They become “Senescent Cells” – aging cells that stop dividing but refuse to disappear.

These “Zombie Cells” secrete SASP (Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype), a toxic cocktail that forces healthy cells to age prematurely.

SASP creates a state of chronic, low-grade inflammation (Inflammaging). This constant stress keeps the ROS cycle spinning, spreading damage across all three skin layers.

The Energy Crisis

The skin’s ability to heal is directly tied to its “Cellular Energy.”

1. The NAD+ Collapse

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is the most critical coenzyme for life. In the Aging Loop, skin cells experience NAD+ Depletion.

The Fuel Gauge

NAD+ is the fuel that powers ATP production in the mitochondria. Without it, the skin’s “power plants” shut down.

The DNA Repair Block

NAD+ is required by PARP enzymes to repair DNA damage. When NAD+ is depleted, DNA repair stops, leading to mutations and senescence.

The SIRT1 Switch

NAD+ acts as the “key” that unlocks SIRT1 – the longevity protein. Without NAD+, your body’s master switch for youth remains “OFF.”

2. Mitochondrial Dysfunction

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is the most critical coenzyme for life. In the Aging Loop, skin cells experience NAD+ Depletion.

DNA Damage

ROS damages mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA).

The Leak

Dysfunctional mitochondria produce less ATP but more ROS

The Shutdown

The cell loses the ability to perform Mitophagy (clearing out old mitochondria). The cell becomes filled with “exhausted” mitochondria, leading to Cellular Exhaustion and Metabolic Inflexibility.

Aging is a loop.

Longevity is a choice.
